#Interview with M.T. Bass, author of Article 15

Article 15 is a story that has been a long time in the making. Author M.T. Bass tells us why, as well as a little bit more about his book in this interview. Plus you can check out an excerpt and then follow the tour for even more. And then of course there is a great giveaway at the end!

What was the inspiration behind this book?

It was the opening sentence:  “She was one in a million and the day I met her I should have bought a lottery ticket instead.”

I had that line written for years, trying in vain to figure out what exactly to do with it.  I knew the story was somehow going to be a variation on the Matty Walker/Ned Racine (Body Heat), Bridget Gregory/Clay Gregory (The Last Seduction) and Catherine Tramell/Nick Curan (Basic Instinct)  kind of, er, um, “romance?”  I really like the strong female leads in those stories—and, of course, the darkly twisted plot lines.

Anyway, Article 15 is actually the first book I’ve written that takes place in the present time.  I’ve kind of worked the decades all around current events, so that was inspiring, too.

Which character was your favorite to write?

Your question certainly gives me pause. I reckon it would have to be Griff’s hillbilly lawyer, E.J. Leonard, Esq.  One of my all time favorite TV shows is Justified and this character is an homage to the man who created Rayland Givens, Boyd Crowder,  et al and all their wonderful dialog:  Elmore (John) Leonard. One of my favorite authors.

Which of your book worlds would you like to visit?

You know, I’ve been to most all of the places in my books with the sole exception of Alaska, which is the setting for Somethin’ for Nothin’.  Of course, it would be great to hit 88 miles per hour and go back in the old Delorean to actually visit during the time that the Alaska Pipeline was being built as it was probably like the Wild, Wild West. But I’ll go anytime.  My buddies have told me amazing flying, fishing and huntings stories from the Great White North that make me want to eat my liver.

On what are you currently working?

Right now, I’m plodding through the first draft of Jungleland, which is a sequel to my very first book, My Brother’s Keeper. I always intended it to be a series centered on a former World War II P-51 Mustang fighter pilot who is kind of an airport gigolo and wanders aimlessly in and out of flying adventures.  Jungleland takes place in Congo where Hawk gets involved flying mercenary missions in the civil war there during the Sixties. It also involves entanglement with a woman doctor doing missionary work. It’s kind of like Heart of Darkness with airplanes.

I’ve also got two other sequels up on my To-Do List:  Motherless Children, which is book #4 in my Murder by Munchausen Series; and Outside the Wire, which is the next book after Article 15 in the Griffith Crowe Stories. They’re in the mental fermentation stage.

When not writing, what can we find you doing?

Flying—I’m a Commercial Pilot and Certified Flight (or is that “Fright”) Instructor. Making noise playing guitar with my Blues Buddies (they don’t call me “Mudcat” for nothing). And pounding away on lumber to rennovate our building in the Arts & Entertainment District in downtown Lorain, Ohio.  It’s the former editorial offices and printing plant for the Lorain Evening Herald and was built in 1901. It will soon be the lair for my publishing empire and Lola’s art gallery and boutique.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

I’d tell my cousin, Tommy, “Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah!”

See, he won the Illinois Lottery for $20 million and never shared one penny with me…the brother he never had.

“She was one in a million…and the day I met her I should have bought a lottery ticket instead.”

***~~~***

Griffith Crowe, the “fixer” for a Chicago law firm, falls for his current assignment, Helena Nicholson, the beautiful heir of a Tech Sector venture capitalist who perished in a helicopter crash leaving her half a billion dollars, a Learjet 31, and unsavory suspicions about her father’s death. As he investigates, the ex-Navy SEAL crosses swords with Helena’s step-brother, the Pentagon’s Highlands Forum, and an All-Star bad guy somebody has hired to stop him. When Griff finds himself on the wrong side of an arrest warrant he wonders: Is he a player or being played?

Lawyers and Lovers and Guns…Oh, my!

Read an excerpt:

She was one in a million…and the day I met her I should have bought a lottery ticket instead.
Blonde, slim and well-built, of course, her eyes were darkly blue which, when unsheathed from behind her Jackie Ohhs, glinted like gun metal at twilight.
I noticed when we first met.
I ignored it after the first time we made love.
I caught it again as she testified against me.
I suppose, I’ll just never learn.

    1. I went back and checked: I first created the Scrivener file on November 16, 2017, but I don’t think I really got started until the following spring as I was finishing up the last of my Munchausen trilogy. So, all in all, it took me about 18 months to get it done.

      Thanks.

      ~Mudcat
